The student

W1: knows the structure of academic essay and the principles of paraphrasing, summarising and citing academic texts in English (K_W04)

The student

U1: is able to create adequately structured academic texts based on sources and create citations to these sources, following the MA stylesheet guidelines and the teacher’s suggestions (K_U01, K_U07, K_U14)

U2: is able to select sources independently in order to support the thesis expressed in his or her academic text at the level of C1+ (K_U01, K_U11)

U3: can create adequately formatted formal academic summaries and citations to sources according to guidelines of the MA stylesheet and with due care as to the copyright and ethical use of sources (K_U11, K_U14, K_U18, K_U20)

U4: is capable of creating written academic texts using a word processor, following the MA stylesheet guidelines for particular sections of the MA (K_U14)

U5: can correctly apply stylistic and punctuation conventions in English, identify incoherent text fragments and correct them (K_U15)

The student

K1: is able to express an informed opinion on fragments of texts selected for peer-evaluation (K_K02)

K2: is aware of the necessity to comply with the obligations following from the binding copyright liabilities and good practices in creating academic texts (K_K04)

Assessment methods (winter and summer semesters):

− in-class tests (U1, U5)

− in-class and homework writing assignments (W1, U1, U2, U3, U4)

− participation in class activities recorded in an assessment log (W1, U1, U3, U4, K1, K2)

− final writing test (W1, U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, K2)

Assessment criteria:

fail – 0-59%

satisfactory – 60-69 %

satisfactory plus – 70-75 %

good – 75-85%

good plus – 86-90%

very good – 91-100%

The final test in Practical English is administered to determine the extent to which students have met the assumed learning outcomes and its result constitutes 50% of the final grade.

The students are evaluated in accordance with the university regulations, and they must attend all course meetings. Each class absence has to be excused in the first week after the lesson missed. The final grade percentage will be reduced by 10% for every unexcused absence.

Content distribution (Winter semester):

− Introduction (presentation of learning outcomes, content of the course, evaluation methods and criteria, code of conduct)

− Gaining and developing skills connected with academic writing - working on clarity, coherence, style, logical and grammatical correctness, and vocabulary characteristic of the academic register in accordance to C1+ standards

− Gaining knowledge and competence connected with writing a master's thesis - a knowledge of the structure of the master's thesis, acquaintance with the Department of English stylesheet, finding and evaluating sources, compiling references and footnotes, paraphrasing and quoting

− Developing competence connected with maintaining ethical norms while writing C1+ texts

− Developing skills related to critical reading and correcting of one's own texts - self-evaluation and peer evaluation

− Developing competence connected with working with a text editor
