Skrócony opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The aim of the course is to examine Aeschylus’ Oresteia - as a literary and theatre work; to present the reception of this work in the worldwide literature and culture and to find the way how it might have been performed in antiquity as well as how it may be staged nowadays.

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

Aeschylus’s Oresteia is the only extant trilogy of antiquity, one of the best known ancient pieces of literature. It deals with the story of the fatal return of one of the greatest ancient warrior, Agamemnon, to Argos, his kingdom, after ten years of the Trojan War. Today it is often perceived as a literary work, so during the course we will analyse and interpret the whole work, because it deals with many questions. We will consider whether they are still important and what kind of questions this play may convey for the modern public. But we will also take a closer look on this piece not only as a literary work, but especially as a theatre work that should be performed on stage (as it was in the Vth century BC). We will try to comprehend how the premiere of Oresteia might have looked (taking into account the ancient Greek theatre stage), but we will also think about the prospective modern stage production of this piece (taking into account the modern theatre stage as well as other problems connected with staging any ancient play).

The main objective of the course is to make students acquainted with different issues concerning the analysis and interpretation of the work that is both a piece of beautiful literature, but also a piece of moving theatre. The discussion, exercises and workshops are assumed to lead the students towards the better understanding of the relations between myth, history, culture, literature, art and theatre, both ancient and modern, as well as of the representation of ancient myths in the worldwide literature and culture.

During the course the active presence of the students is obligatory.
