ENGLISH LINGUISTICS: A BROAD VIEW

Contact hours with teacher:

- participation in tutorials - 30 hrs.

W1 - The student has in-depth knowledge of the multiple issue of the English language (cognitive, social, diachronic, comparative) (K_W01)

W2 - The student has in-depth knowledge of the use of English for special purposes.

W3 - The student has in-depth knowledge of applied linguistic analysis and creative uses of English. (K_W03)

W4 - The student has in-depth knowledge of the links between language studies and literature and non-literary discourse.

W5 -The student has in-depth knowledge of research-related terminology and methodology applied in English Linguistics.

W6 - The student has in-depth knowledge of selected language issues in the comparative aspects (involving stylistic analysis and translation) (K_W03)

U1 - The student is able to search for, analyze, evaluate, select, and apply information using various sources and to formulate critical opinions based on special aspects of linguistic analysis and creative skills in English. (K_U01)

The aim of the course English Linguistics is to organize and expand the students’ orientation across general and descriptive linguistics, and also theoretical-methodological approaches. Additionally, it aims to provide a survey of issues on language variation regarding the English language (in diachronic, regional, social and stylistic dimensions).

A REVISION of issues overlapping with other (earlier) courses, e.g. General, Descriptive and Contrastive Linguistics, and also the Theory of Communication (winter term):

The students will be assessed on the basis of attendance (on-line presence during distance-learning sessions or real-space contact sessions if the situation permits), on the basis of their aptitude resulting from regarding active engagement in the activities, on the basis of assignments sent on time according to ongoing instructions at particular stages of the course (worksheets and mini-essays), the final test or project, and/or the examination test if relevant.
