U1: displays advanced public speaking skills in terms of producing and delivering texts orally in English using basic theoretical approaches and a variety of sources; can hold a debate (K_U05, K_U06)

U2: displays advanced argumentation skills and is able to refer to scholars’ opinions as well as to draw conclusions and prepare synthetic summaries in English (K_U13)

U3: is able to work in a group and to assume different roles including that of the leader; can show others the reasons for and the methods of life-long learning (K_U09, K_U10)

U4: understands longer utterances and lectures on topics related to their field of study. The student understands speakers communicating in English (for example, during national and international meetings and classes taught as a part of international exchange programmes) (K_U19)

U14: has language skills at level C1+, which allows them to function effectively in an English speaking context and in an academic context (K_U15)

The student:

K1: is aware of the level of their knowledge and skills and understands the need for constant learning and development of their skills. The student is able to inspire and coordinate the learning process of other persons (K_K01)

K2: is aware of their language competence, can develop their skills outside university and is aware of continuous development of language skills (K_K01)


Metody dydaktyczne:

Depending on course component specificity, all the classes may also utilize a range of other TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) techniques, such as dictations and reading aloud, translation of the Polish terms and sentences, oral and written description, storytelling, mini-lecture, student project preparation, language lab work, standardised test taking, etc.

Skrócony opis:

The composite course aims at developing students' language skills at level C1+ according to the CEFR and consists of two modules, i.e. ‘Academic Listening and Speaking ’ and ‘use of English’. The two modules complete each other and aim at developing students’ integrated skills in relation to academic English.

During the Academic Listening and Speaking class, students intensively practice using spoken English to achieve communicative accuracy, as well as increasing fluency and appropriacy in the academic English register, as well as maintain grammatical and lexical accuracy, in order to reach level C1+.

During the use of English class students practice their knowledge of English grammar and lexis at level C1+ in contexts.

The composite course aims at developing students' language skills at level C1+ according to the CEFR and consists of two modules, i.e. ‘Academic Listening and Speaking ’ and ‘use of English’. The two modules complete each other and aim at developing students’ integrated skills in relation to academic English.

Practical English consists of the following components:

- Academic Listening and Speaking,

- Use of English.

Academic Listening and Speaking

In the course of the classes students will practice speaking fluently and appropriately to arrive at the C1+ level of competence in English, also in terms of grammar and vocabulary. Speaking tasks will be integrated with listening comprehension practice based on academic lectures. The topics will be organized as below, with each of these leading to the development of the following competencies.

The course consists of practical exercises related to the use of grammar and lexis:

- modal verbs - predicting, truth and possibility, necessity, duty and advice, intention, willingness, frequency, habit, ability and permission, modals in the past

- subjunctives and unreal past; conditionals - subjunctives and unreal past, real conditionals, unreal conditionals, past conditionals

- linking clauses - time and reason, result and purpose, concession clauses

- adjectives and adverbs - adjective structures, inversion making comparisons

- verbs commonly used in the passive

- phrasal verbs, verbs + prepositions

- noun clauses - that-clauses, wh-clauses, to-infinitve and ing clauses, reference: this, that, these, those, such, so

- relative clauses - words used with relative pronouns, omitting relative pronouns, nominal relative pronouns

- emphasis - fronting, introductory it and there, emphasis using what, all and it, nominalisation

- reported speech - tenses in reported speech, report structures

- verb complementation - reflexive and reciprocal verbs, verbs + that clauses and adjectives, verbs + prepositional and adverbial phrases

The task types the students will concentrate on are the following: multiple choice, open cloze, error correction, word formation, gapped text, and paraphrases (whole sentence paraphrases, gapped sentences and key word transformations).

fail- 0-59%

satisfactory- 60 - 69 %

satisfactory plus- 70 - 75 %

good - 76 - 85 %

good plus- 86 - 90%

very good- 91 - 100%

The final test/presentation in every Practical English module is administered to determine the extent to which students have met the assumed learning outcomes and it values at least 50% of the final grade. A passing score must be obtained on the final test to pass each component.

Timely completion of assigned tasks is obligatory. In the case of assignments submitted after the deadline or re-submitted, the grade is lowered by 10%.

The students are evaluated in accordance with the university regulations, and they must attend all course meetings. Informed participation in class discussions – based on completion of the assigned reading and supportive collaboration with classmates – is also required. Each class absence has to be excused in the first week after the lesson missed. The final grade percentage will be reduced by 10% for every unexcused absence. A grade average of at least 60% must be achieved to pass each Practical English module, so the students who have passed the final test but failed to obtain the required cumulative grade point average have to retake the final test and achieve the result sufficient to make up for the points lost due to unexcused absences.

Instructors are authorized to refuse credit when the student’s absenteeism rate is around 50%.

The value of the above qualitative aspects is the following:

The end-of-semester test in each semester must be passed in order for the student to obtain a passing grade. The test is worth 80% of the final grade. Passing threshold for the test is 60%. There is only one retake.

The remaining 20% of the final grade in Use of English will be calculated on the basis of the student’s participation and engagement in the class, expressed by pluses and minuses, awarded by the teachers. Each student is initially assessed at a passing level (60%). Each plus increases that score by 5% and each minus lowers the score by 5%.

In order to pass the use of English course a student has to pass the end-of-semestre test. Each test is evaluated in the following way:

fail- 0-59%

satisfactory- 60 - 69 %

satisfactory plus- 70 - 75 %

good - 76 - 85 %

good plus- 86 - 90%

very good- 91 - 100%
