W1: knows the structure of academic essay and the principles of paraphrasing, summarising and citing academic texts in English (K_W02)

Efekty uczenia się - umiejętności:

(tylko po angielsku) U1: is able to create adequately structured academic texts based on sources and create citations to these sources, following the MA stylesheet guidelines and the teacher’s suggestions (K_U05, K_U14)


U2: is able to select sources independently in order to support the thesis expressed in his or her academic text at the level of C1+ (K_U04, K_U14)


U3: can create adequately formatted formal academic summaries and citations to sources according to guidelines of the MA stylesheet and with due care as to the copyright and ethical use of sources (K_U04, K_U14)


U4: can correctly apply stylistic and punctuation conventions in English, identify incoherent text fragments and correct them (K_U14)


U5: is capable of creating written academic texts using a word processor, following the MA stylesheet guidelines for particular sections of the MA (K_U14)

Practical English Writing in the second year of the second degree programme aims to provide students with skills necessary to write a master's thesis.

Practical English - Writing in the second year of the second cycle programme aims to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to write a master's thesis. In order to do so, in the winter semester the classes focus on gaining and developing the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the content of the course. In the summer semester, the classes focus on practising and implementing these skills and competencies in the work on students’ MA texts.

Content distribution:

− developing and revising skills connected with academic writing - working on clarity, coherence, style, logical and grammatical correctness, and using vocabulary suitable to the academic register

- developing and revising skills connected with academic writing - working on clarity, coherence, style, logical and grammatical correctness, and using vocabulary suitable to the academic register

- practicing the use of punctuation (especially with advanced linking devices) and academic register

- practicing skills in summarizing and paraphrasing academic texts

- individual consultation based on regularly submitted excerpts of the MA thesis

Assessment methods:

− in-class tests (U1, U4)

− in-class and homework writing assignments (W1, U1, U2, U3, U4)

− participation in class activities recorded in an assessment log (W1, U1, U3, U4, K1, K2)

− final writing task (W1, U1, U2, U3, U4, U5 K2)

- in-class tasks (2 * 10% = 20%),

- Moodle tasks (10 tasks * 3% = 30%),

- MA excerpts (2 * 25% = 50%, penalties for late submissions).

Assessment criteria:

fail – 0-59%

satisfactory – 60-69%

satisfactory plus – 70-75%

good – 76-85%

good plus – 86-90%

very good – 91-100%
