Efekty uczenia się - wiedza:

W1: has advanced knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of English, enabling them to translate selected non-literary texts from English into Polish and from Polish into English (K_W02)

W2: has advanced knowledge about translation problems and requirements connected with translation of selected non-literary texts (K_W03)

W3: has advanced knowledge of the range of usage of specialist terminology from the discussed non-literary texts and problems connected with their translation (K_W04)

W4: The graduate is familiar with the connections between technical restrictions in translation and the characteristics of particular media and channels of communication (K_W08)

W5: possesses advanced knowledge of the differences between the conventions used in Polish and English non-literary texts in the areas of the structure of the text, register, formulaic language structures (K_W13)

U1: is able to read and comprehend selected specialist source texts and translate them, preserving their meaning and taking into consideration the needs of the target audience (K_U02 )

U2: is able to translate advanced non-literary texts from selected areas from English into Polish (K_U03 K_U17)

U3: is able to translate advanced non-literary texts from selected areas from Polish into English (K_U04 K_U17)

U4: can identify the dominant function and other relevant properties of translated texts and describe them using translation terminology (K_U10)

U5: is capable of creating written translations from Polish into English and from English into Polish, using adequate translation strategies and techniques (K_U11)

U6: is capable of identifying and correcting language errors characteristic of the B2+ level of foreign language proficiency (K_U15)

U7: is able to translate independently selected non-literary texts, using various translation tools (K_U16)

U8: is able to choose and apply in translation stylistic means and register suitable for a given text and target audience (K_U18)

K1: understands the need for verification and constant improvement of their translation competence and accepts constructive assessment of their translation work. The student actively participates in translation tasks involving coordinated effort in group work, appraises translation choices of other translators and comments on them (K_K01)

K2: identifies problems and errors in translation and proposes and justifies solutions and corrections (K_K04)

K3: graduate is aware of ethical and professional translation standards and conforms to them in the translation process (K_K07)

Skrócony opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The course discusses selected issues in the translation of texts for tourism and fine arts. It will present the characteristic features of text targeted at a general audience and those addressing specialists in the field of management, study and preservation of work of art, as well as trade in cultural goods (offers guides, catalogues, promotional leaflets, websites, etc.) Students will be required to produce, analyze and correct translations texts into Polish and English.

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The course will discuss aspects of texts regarding fine arts, cultural goods, and built heritage, which students will need to preserve in their translations, while also maintaining fluent, idiomatic, and attractive style. Translating the texts will require:

- command of terminology specific to the field and understading of the original text, manifesting itself in a clear organization of the target text and unambiguous usage of terminology,

- anticipating the needs of the target audience,

- dealing with ambiguous or poorly structured source texts,

- constraints imposed by target text format (e.g. maximum text length, content synchrony, segmentation for online publication).

Students will have a chance to work on real-life texts and translation proejcts (translating a website on the rpeservation and restoration of built heritage).

The order and extent of the topics in subject to change to accommodate students' needs and interests.

Assessment methods:

Winter semester

A graded credit on the basis of the following:

− the results of a final test consisting in translating excerpts of non-literary text from Polish into English and excerpts of non-literary text from English into Polish (70%) (W1, W3, W5, U1, U2, U3, U5, U7, U8, K3)

− in-class activity, group work (15%) (W3, W8, K4, K7)

− the results of translation tasks involving translating and correcting excerpts of non-literary texts (15%) (W1, W2, W3, W5, W4, W5, U1, U3, U5, U7, U8, K1, K2, K3)

Summer semester

The final examination grade is the sum of the following:

− the results of an in-class task involving translation of an excerpt of non-literary text (20%) (W1, W3, W5, U1, U3, U5, U7, U8, K1, K3)

− the results of an in-class task involving correcting and commenting on translation errors in an excerpt of non-literary text (10%) (W2, W3, W4, W5, U1, U4, U6, K1, K2)

− graded homework (70%) (W1, W3, W5, U1, U2, U3, U5, U7, U8, K3)

Assessment criteria:

fail – 0-59%

satisfactory – 60-69 %

satisfactory plus – 70-75 %

good – 76-85 %

good plus – 86-90%

very good – 91-100
