W2: has in-depth knowledge of grammar structures, punctuation, spelling and lexicon in the context of the differences between British and American varieties of English (K_W02, K_W13).


W3: has in-depth knowledge of vocabulary and grammar of English in the context of language style and register (K_W01, K_W02)

U1: comprehends advanced texts written in English to the extent that they can amend the texts according to pre-set rules and the rules of correct usage (K_U02)


U2: can identify errors of grammar, usage, vocabulary choice, spelling and punctuation in advanced texts in English and correct them (K_U15, K_U10)


U3: can distinguish British English and American English spelling conventions (K_U18)


U4: can analyse bibliographic information and write lists of references according to pre-set house-style rules (K_U20, K_U11)


U5: comprehends samples of advanced texts written in English and is able to assess and amend their style and register (K_U02, K_U15, K_U20)

The course will provide students with skills and knowledge of English (British and American varieties) in its prescribed, correct usage conventions in the area of grammar, spelling, punctuation, style and register in written texts, with a view to enabling the students to carry out copy-editing tasks.

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The course comprises exercises which aim at gaining knowledge and skills required to carry out copy-editing tasks in English texts. In the winter semester, the exercises focus on spelling (in British and American varieties), grammar and punctuation conventions in their prescribed, correct usage that will enable the students to bring texts into conformance with pre-set rules, including house-style rules and rules of correct usage. In the summer semester, the students acquire the knowledge of style and register in written texts, learn to assess the readability of text and edit it for clarity and concision.

Content distribution (Winter semester):

− Introduction: familiarising the students with the assumed learning outcomes, seminar topics, code of conduct, evaluation methods and criteria

− Spelling rules, spelling difficulties, homophones, differences between British and American spelling conventions

− Use of punctuation

− Grammar and word usage

− Complex grammar structures

− House-style

− In-class assignment involving copy-editing

− Evaluation of the achieved learning outcomes: written end-of semester-test

− Feedback on evaluation test

Content distribution (Summer semester):

− Introduction: familiarising the students with the assumed learning outcomes, seminar topics, code of conduct, evaluation methods and criteria

− Assessing clarity and readability of text

− Stylistic editing for clarity (sentence length, nominalisation, use of voice)

− Stylistic editing for clarity (negation, position of modifiers, placement of the verb)

− Stylistic editing for clarity (use of parallel structure, ensuring pronominal referentiality, modifier and prepositional strings)

− Stylistic editing for concision (short vs. long words, redundancy, periphrasis)

− Use of register (register and text types; formal vs. informal language, colloquial language, slang, jargon)

− Use of register (vocabulary choice, words of foreign origin)

− Use of register (expressions and grammatical structures relevant to register)

− In-class assignment involving copy-editing

− Evaluation of the achieved learning outcomes: end-of-semester test

− Feedback on evaluation test
