Skrócony opis:

The aim of the course English Linguistics is to organize and expand the students’ orientation across general and descriptive linguistics, and also theoretical-methodological approaches. Additionally, it aims to provide a survey of issues on language variation regarding the English language (in diachronic, regional, social and stylistic dimensions).

A REVISION of issues overlapping with other (earlier) courses, e.g. General, Descriptive and Contrastive Linguistics, and also the Theory of Communication (winter term):

· structure-function in language and the levels of organization

· semiotics: the semiotic sign: index, icon, symbol, codes, media, etc

· paralinguistic features of communication & language variation: social, regional...

· communication model: speech chain

· design features of language & functions of language

· ontological & epistemological issues & theory-practice, fact-value

· morphology and word formation processes

· syntactic and semantic roles and relations

· semantics: denotation-connotation, sense-reference & sense relations: polysemy, homonymy, etc.

· text linguistics: textuality criteria: cohesion-coherence, etc.

· pragmatics: entailment, presupposition, implicature,

· Cooperation Principle (Maxims), The Speech Act Theory (felicity conditions)

· contrastive linguistics
