The course will discuss constrained translation, with specific focus on translating audiovisual and interactive materials. Students will prepare translations for use in subtitling, voice-over, and software localization. |
Pełny opis: |
The course will present technical and synchrony-related issues in translation of polysemiotic texts (relying on several channels), such as software localization, film subtitling and audio-description. Specifically, the topics will include: • polysemiotic and monosemiotic texts, constrained translation, interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation, isosemiotic and diasemiotic translation • translation and localization, translatable assets, localization-related software • software localization: string-length, inflection and variables as constraints • introduction to film translation: technical standards and constraints, synchrony between channels in film translation • subtitling: reducing and dividing captions, spotting, basic functions of subtitling software • translation for voice-over: text synchronization, reduction, speakability • translation for audio-description as intersemiotic translation: conventions and common mistakes • translation for dubbing: production process and technical requirements The order and extent of the above topics is subject to change to accommodate students' needs and interests. |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
The semester will conclude with a test featuring theoretical and practical components (i.e. translation, editing, and problem-solving tasks), representing knowledge- and skill-related learning outcomes. To earn credit for the semester, students will need a passing grade for both types of tasks. In-class activity proving social competencies (i.e. group translation tasks) will be also required. W1, U1, U3 - test in audiovisual translation (80%) U2, U4, U5, K1 - in-class activity, groupwork (20%) 2 - below 55% 3 – 55-69 % 3+ – 70-74 % 4 – 75-84 % 4+ - 85-89% 5 – 90-100% |
