Skrócony opis: (tylko po angielsku)

In this one semester survey lecture, we give an elementary introduction to a number of basic mathematical theories. A brief history of a development of basic concepts of modern mathematics will be also presented together with their influence on today mathematics. Among other theories, we will present an overview of the Euclidean geometry (with a particular emphasis on its Hilbert's axiomatisation), of linear algebra and non-Euclidean geometries, of mathematical logic and set theory, of Galois theory, of Lie theory (and its influence on topology and an application to a group analysis of differential equations), the spectral graph theory, an elementary Diophantine geometry, and applications to an algorithmic analysis of a production-marketing-profit type schemes. We will also present some of the well-known great hypotheses including the continuum hypothesis, Fermat's last theorem, Catalan's hypothesis, Riemann's hypothesis, Poincare hypothesis, and others.

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

A program of this one semester survey lecture contains the following subjects.

1. Basic facts on axiomatic theories. A semantic approach, versus an axiomatic approach. A model of a theory. Categorical theories and complete theories. Basic mathematical logic.

2. Euclidean geometry (with a particular emphasis on its Hilbert's axiomatisation), non-Euclidean geometries, Riemann geometries, Klein's model, Minkowski's spaces. On a theorem of Goedel.

3. Axioms of the set theory and their elementary consequences. On Georg Cantor and the continuum hypothesis of 1878. On results of Paul Cohen (1963) and a generalized continuum hypothesis.

4. On David Hilbert (1862 -1943) and the well-known list of Hilbert's problems.

5. International Congresses of Mathematicians. A brief history of Field's Medal (in a relation with the Alfred Nobel Prize). Nevalina's medal.

6. Evarist Galois (1811-1832) and Niels Henrik Abel (1789-1857). Basic facts on Galois theory and its consequences for elementary geometry constructions.

7. A survey on the number theory and Diophantine geometry. On results of E. E. Kummer in XIX Century. On Fermat's last theorem, results of Andrew Wiles (in 1993-94), and application in cryptography.

8. On results of Sophus Lie (1842-1899), Lie theory, and its influence on topology. Application Lie theory to the group analysis of differential equations.

9. Basic fact on the development of linear algebra. Applications to the algorithmic spectral graph theory.

10. A production-marketing-profit type scheme, its graph theoretical models and an algorithmic analysis of such models with a non-negative profit. Applications of elementary Diophantine geometry ideas and results. Dynkin diagrams and the isometries of Platonic solids and cristals.

10. Algorithms, cellular automata, Alan Turing, and his theory. Computational complexity of algorithms.

11. Constructive mathematics, computability, symbolic computations.

12. On scientific computing and application of computer algebra. On a development of computer sciences and applications

13. Polish mathematics school of XX Century before the Second World War (Stefan Banach, Kazimierz Kuratowski, Wacław Sierpiński, Alfred Tarski, and others). An activity of Stanisław Ulam in Los Alamos National Laboratory (1943-1952).

14. On model theory, non-standard models, and some consequences of Łoś compactness theorem.

15. On the development of mathematical theories and information sciences in the last 50 years.

16. On a publication process of research results in mathematical journals
