– W1: has basic knowledge about classical Greece history and art;

– W2: knows basic styles and architectural orders in ancient Greece art and craft;

– W3: is familiar with impact of classical Greece art and architecture on early modern period.

– U1: is able to recognize main technics and styles of ancient Greece art;

– U2: is able to recognize the ‘classical elements’ in architecture and art from later historical periods;

– U3: can analyse examples of ancient Greece craft, art and architecture.

– discussion seminar assisted with multimedia presentations; introduction to each topic by a short lecture.

The main aim of the course is to get students familiar with the cultural diversity of ancient Greece especially the classical period. The students will get knowledge about architecture, crafts and art which flourished in classical Greek poleis. They will learn about the most famous and significant archeological sites and discovers which helped scholars to understand the world of ancient Greeks. The all issues concerned during the course will refer to the problem of impact of the ancient Greek culture on early modern and modern period.

The culture of ancient Greece was very complex construction which separate elements are still the subject of deep studies. The aim of the course is to consider only one aspect of this fascinating creation – the legacy of ancient Greece culture and its influence on early modern and modern times. In order to do this the students will learn about different aspect of ancient Greece culture, crafts, arts and architecture. They will learn about the process which effected in changing the ancient Greece culture from archaic to classical. The value of archeological research in studding this process will be strongly stressed. The lectures will focus on the most important examples of classical Greece secular and sacral architecture, sculpture, relief and vase paintings what help students understand when and how the re-discovery of ancient civilizations impacted on European art and worldview in 17th–19th century. The issues about modern meaning of terminology – classic, classical, classicism – will be discussed. The great discovers of 17th and 19th century, together with modern reinterpretation of them, will be introduced to students. During the lectures students will get acquainted with Polish activity on the field of archaeological research and crating the collections of ancient art in early modern period.
