Skrócony opis: |
How to “read” Caravaggio’s sacral art holistically? One would definitely have to take into account the style and trends of the epoque. On the other hand, one might not overlook the biblical background proper to his works of art. The course is aimed at broadening the viewer’s horizons in this regard. |
Pełny opis: |
Art is to provoke and inspire. But artists themselves also need inspiration. For many centuries the Bible was a prominent source of inspiration for many artists. Caravaggio was one of them, even though he lived a life which was far from religious standards. The works of art he left, especially those inspired by biblical events and figures, are worth a thorough study. Within this class the student will be offered some insight on the style that Caravaggio represented. However, a special emphasis will be put on bringing to light – nomen omen – the biblical echoes present in his paintings as well as biblical symbolism they contain. The following subjects will be dealt with during subsequent classes: 1. The Bible and its interpretation 2. The life of Caravaggio and the artistic challenges of the epoque 3. “David and Goliath” 4. St. John the Baptist – life and death 5-6. Christ – betrayal, death and resurrection 7. The Evangelists and Disciples |
