The principles of clinical medicine constitutes one of the first clinical subjects for medical students that bridges basic sciences with clinical disciplines. It aims to provide students with a solid background for clinical medicine. During the course of “The principles of clinical medicine” students are familiarized with the process of clinical decision making. In details, student are taught: how to properly take medical history, how to appropriately examine a patient, when to implement a particular diagnostic test as well as how to critically appraise its value in order to establish a correct diagnosis. A comprehensive overview of signs and symptoms of various disorders is given to students during lectures, seminars and tutorials. Much attention is paid to the issue of differential diagnosis. Furthermore, numerous diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are demonstrated. To make the education process complete, students apply their theoretical knowledge on history taking and physical examination gained at lectures and seminars during practical classes with patients. After this introduction to clinical medicine, students are well-trained to continue their education in internal medicine, paediatrics, neurology, oncology, surgery, otorynolaryngology etc.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Rules of final examination or credit for each course in the module are available in the unit responsible for the course.

Criteria of final practical examination or credit for each course in the module are available in the unit responsible for the course.

Criteria for passing the final examination or obtaining credit for each course in the module are available in the unit responsible for the course. For passing the module and receiving a final grade from the module, it is mandatory to pass final examination for all courses in the module. The final grade for the module will be based on a weighted arithmetic mean of grades received for all courses. Weight of the grade (W) for each course depends on ECTS credits for the course, and it is calculated based on the following formula: W = A x ECTS credits, where A indicates the grade (2 or 3 or 4 or 5). The total amount ECTS credits for the module is 17.2. ECTS credits for each course in the module are as follows:

1. Introduction to Internal Diseases: 4.8

2. Radiology Technique: 0.7

3. Laboratory Medicine: 2.6

4. Introduction to Paediatrics: 4.0

5. Introduction to Surgery: 1.5

6. Introduction to Neurology, Neurosurgery and Sense Organs: 1.5

7. Introduction to Gyneacology and Obstetrics: 1.5

8. Introduction to Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery: 0.6

The final grade from the module will be calculated based on the following formula:

Final grade = (W1+W2+W3+W4+W5+W6+W7+W8)/17.2

Shall the result is a fraction, the grade will be rounded according to commonly accepted mathematical criteria. A student who failed to pass retake of final examination for a course, does not pass the module.
