W1: Student has an ordered knowledge of the main theories within philosophical aesthetics.

W2: Student knows basic terminology referring to aesthetics and its main categories and can define their meaning.

W3: Student knows the relations between problems of epistemology and aesthetics.

U1: Student selects, analyzes, evaluates and uses information from different sources.

U2: Student can present ideas and arguments of chosen standpoints in aesthetics.

U3: Student can define most important categories and notions referring to philosophical aesthetics.

K1: Student understands the social aspects of the practical application of knowledge.

The aim of the course is to present the main issues raised in philosophical aesthetics, referring to historical development of chosen ideas. During the seminar, the place of aesthetics as a part of epistemology will be presented together with the historical development of main categories (beauty and sublime, comedy and tragedy). Source texts and multimedia presentations will be used as a ground for discussions.

The contents of the course encompass the specificity of philosophical aesthetics, the question of the objectivity of aesthetic judgments, the evolution of the notion of aesthetics in the history of philosophy, the main aesthetic values such as beauty, sublime, grace, comedy, tragedy, and the notions and phenomena that occurred within philosophical aesthetics since the 18th century such as: the antinomy of taste, disinterestedness, material, formal, and expressive value of beauty. Another topic raised at the seminar is the history of the notion of the work of art and chosen contemporary approaches to it.

The course will be based on classical conceptions and theories of modern and contemporary aesthetics by Batteux, Shaftesbury, Burke, Hume, Kant, Schiller, Scheler, Gadamer, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset, Santayana, Heidegger.
