W1: The student has in-depth knowledge of the contemporary American literary essay and is familiar with its distinctive features (K_W04),

W2: The student has advanced knowledge of selected historical, social, religious, philosophical and political issues determining the development of the American literary essay in the last two decades (K_W08).

U1: The student is able to place American contemporary literary essays in a general historical and cultural context (K_U09),

U2: The student is able to analyze and interpret contemporary American literary essays with the use of basic terminology and appropriate methods (K_U11),

U3: The student is able to recognize the literary conventions of the contemporary American literary essay (K_U10).

The seminar attempts to introduce the students to an interesting and relatively distinctive genre of American letters, the literary essay. A combination of classical journalism and literary narrative techniques, the literary essay ties in with a century-long tradition of bringing together fact and fiction in American literature.

The seminar attempts to introduce the students to an interesting and relatively distinctive genre of American letters, the literary essay. A combination of classical journalism and literary narrative techniques, the literary essay ties in with a century-long tradition of bringing together fact and fiction in American literature.

The classes will cover the work of David Foster Wallace and essays edited by his close friend and collaborator, Jonathan Franzen.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Active participation in classes - 20% (K_K02, K_K05),

Midterm Essay - 30% (K_W09, K_U10, K_U11),

Final Essay - 50% (K_W09, K_U10, K_U11).

60%-71% = 3.

72%-76% = 3+

77%-84% = 4.

85%-90% = 4+

91%-100% = 5.

In each of the criteria, the correct and precise use of the English language will be taken into consideration (up to 20% of the grade for the given component).
