K_U02: Student is capable of observing and interpreting literary phenomena thouroughly; as well as is able to analyze their relationships with various areas of culture and with the literatures of various regions of Europe. K_U05: Student possesses advance skills of literary analysis and interpretation; is capable of referring to appropriate literary and extra-literary contexts in their analyses and interpretations. K_U14: Student can acquire knowledge on their own and develop their professional skills making use of diverse sources (in mother tongue as well as in foreign languages) and new technologies (ICT). |

The aim of the course is to present a brief history of carnival and carnival-type celebrations (eg. feast of fools, feast of the ass). The course also includes a detailed presentation and discussion of Bakhtin's theory of carnival as well as an analysis of carnivalesque literature (e.g. F. Rabelais, “Gargantua and Pantagruel”, F. Dostoyevsky, “The Village of Stepanchikovo, “Bobok”, “The Dream of Ridiculous Man”, M. Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”, V. Ruczinski, “The Return of Woland or New Diaboliad”, S. Mrożek, “Tango”, W. Gombrowicz, “Diary”, “Operetta”) and painting (H. Bosh, “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, P. Breugel, “The Fight Between Carnival and Lent”). |

Course outline: 1. Cultural roots of carnival; mythology, ritual laughter, saturnalia, etc. 2. Carnival and carnival-type celebrations in the Middle Ages; feast of fools, feast of the ass. 3. Contemporary carnival parades and masquerades (The Carnival of Venice, The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, The Carnival of Basel, etc.). 4. Manifestations of carnival in paintings (“The Garden of Earthly Delights” by H. Bosh, “The Fight Between Carnival and Lent” by P. Breugel, etc.). 5. Bakhtin's theory of carnival and carnivalesque literature (“Rabelais and His World”, “Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics”, “The Dialogic Imagination”). 6. The history of the novel in the light of Bakhtin's theory of carnival. 7. Masterpieces of carnivalesque literature – “Gargantua and Pantagruel” by Rabelais. 8. Masterpieces of carnivalesque literature – “The Master and Margarita” by Bulgakov. 9. A Menippean interpretation of “Diary” by Gombrowicz and “Tango” by Mrożek. 10.
