(tylko po angielsku) The course presents some of the most eminent authors and leading themes in Polish literature of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It concentrates on literary representations of communist and post-communist Poland, artistic use of autobiography and the grotesque, fiction and reportage, evidences of Jewish heritage and accounts of the Holocaust, examples of feminist and gay writing. Literary output of such writers as Ida Fink, Witold Gombrowicz, Ryszard Kapuściński, Hanna Krall, Czesław Miłosz, Stanisław Lem, Sławomir Mrożek, Halina Poświatowska, Wisława Szymborska and Michał Witkowski will be discussed. The course aims to present Polish literature of the last decades in its artistic diversity and as a mirror reflecting contemporary Poland. Topics: 1. Contemporary Polish literature – the shortest introduction (lecture) 2. Nobel Prize winners... and other poets (Miłosz, Szymborska et al.) 3. Literary representations of communist Poland (Mrożek and others) 4. Polish collective consciousness (Gombrowicz, Masłowska, Chutnik) 5. Jewish heritage and the Holocaust (Krall and Fink) 6. The female experience (Bator, Chutnik and others) 7. How to be gay in Poland (Witkowski) 8. Science fiction as philosophy? (Lem) 9. Reportage or essay? (Kapuściński) |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
(tylko po angielsku) Continual assessment of the student’s activity during the seminar, evaluation of student’s homework (preparing presentations of life and works of chosen authors) and essay (critical analysis of chosen literary work or other cultural phenomenon). Final grade will be based on: student’s activity during the seminar, evaluation of student’s homework and of the final essay (in equal proportions). |
