Skrócony opis:

The aim of the course “Introduction to analysis of the texts in the first literary language of the Slavs” is to provide a basic theoretical knowledge on: circumstances and conditions of the origin and development of the first Slavic literary language; characteristic features (graphic, phonetic, morphological, syntactic) of the texts created in the language; the importance of OCS to the evolution of Slavic languages and to acquire a practical ability to analyse the adapted OCS texts as well.

Pełny opis:

The course on the subject “Introduction to analysis of the texts in the first literary language of the Slavs” deals with the following issues:

The OCS language as the oldest literary language of the Slavs [genesis of OCS; causes and course of the Great Moravian mission; Slavic liturgy in the post-Cyrillo-Methodian period; OCS among the Indo-European languages; the problem of the cradle (initial dialect) of OCS and its name; stages of OCS; the so-called OCS canon; regional OCS variants and their features; CS redaction; OCS texts – the main divisions: according to alphabet/according to the contents and assignment].

OCS alphabets [history of OCS letters (did the pagan Slavs have got their letters?, what alphabet was created by Constantine-Cyril? – differences in opinions and the argumentation, establishment of the glagolitic alphabet’s seniority, the fate of the glagolitic and cyrillic alphabets, the rules of cyrillic letters’ reading].

OCS vowels and consonants, their origin and development [origin of Proto-Slavic vowels: replacement of quantitative distinctions of vowels with qualitative distinctions, open syllables, fronting of vowels by preceding *j/other palatal consonants as a result of correlation of palatality; reflexes of nasal vowels and of the jat’ in the modern Slavic languages; first, second and third palatalization of velars; action of *j on a preceding consonant/cluster of consonants, the so-called epenthetic l, transformation of *kt’ (*gt’); modern Slavic reflexes of the sequences of a consonant/consonants plus *j and *kt’ (*gt’); the jers, metathesis of liquids, sequences of r, l plus jer (the fate of the jers, strong and weak position, strained, i.e. before a following j position, assimilation, reduction and vocalization of the jers, transformation of the sequences of full vowel plus tautosyllabic liquid and intonation, exceptions from the metathesis, origin and development of vocalic r and l, sequences of r, l plus jer; modern Slavic reflexes of the jers, sequences of full vowels plus r, l and vocalic consonants].

Morphological characterization of OCS texts (part 1) [the noun – forms representative of the successive declensions; inter- and intra-declension influences (declension categories – the division according to Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Slavic stems or according to gender; nom. and gen. sg. endings, reflection of the palatalization processes in the noun forms; examples of the secondarily -jo- and -ja-stem nouns as the results of the 3rd palatalization, derivative noun endings; the pronoun (personal, reflexive, interrogative, indefinite, demonstrative, relative, possessive; enclitic 1st, 2nd person and reflexive pronouns; hard, soft and mixed stems pronoun declensions; insertion of n between preposition and pronoun; the adjective (indefinite and definite forms – structure, meaning and syntactic functions; loss of j between vowels, assimilation, contraction, haplology, analogy; regular and irregular comparative adjectives; characteristic suffixes of the comparative degree; simple and periphrastic forms of the superlative degree; the numeral (cardinal, ordinal, collective – characteristic features, endings; the “agreement” and “government”); examples of changes within the later Slavic declension].

Morphological characterization of OCS texts (part 2) [present (future simple) tense (representatives of the successive conjugations – the division according to the present stem/the infinitive stem; the present tense personal endings; reflection of the palatalization processes in the indicative forms); the imperative (simple and periphrastic forms, characteristic suffixes and particles, endings; reflection of the palatalization processes; variety of the forms); imperfect and aorist (meaning, structure, functions, relation to other tenses in Slavic and non-Slavic languages, imperfect forms derived from the verbs representing various conjugations; 3 types of aorist: asigmatic (or root), sigmatic 1, sigmatic 2 derived from the verbs of various conjugations; reflection of phonetic processes in imperfect and /or aorist forms: i, u, r, k (g) + s + A ≥ x or A + s + A ≥ x, 1st palatalization, lengthening of stem vowels, simplification of consonant clusters, vocalic contractions; the participles (active and passive forms: present active participle, past active participle 1, past active participle 2, present passive participle, past passive participle – structure, conjugation, meaning, functions); periphrastic forms of the verb (perfect, pluperfect (or past perfect), future 1, future 2 (or future perfect), conditional, passive voice – structure, meaning); examples of changes within later Slavic conjugation].

Chosen OCS syntactic constructions [dative of possession, dative absolute, dative/accusative with infinitives, locative without prepositions, supine etc. – structure, meaning].

Peculiarities of OCS phonetics, morphology and syntax – recapitulation [revision and consolidation].
