K_W04: Student has broad and systematized knowledge literary and extra-literary (i.e. historical, philosophical, social, ideological, cultural, regional) contexts of literature, which have contributed to its creation and reception.


Efekty uczenia się - umiejętności:

(tylko po angielsku) K_U01: Student searches for, analyzes, evaluates, selects and consolidates information coming from written and electronic sources.

K_U02: Student is capable of observing and interpreting literary phenomena thouroughly; as well as is able to analyze their relationships with various areas of culture and with the literatures of various regions of Europe.

K_U05: Student possesses advance skills of literary analysis and interpretation; is capable of referring to appropriate literary and extra-literary contexts in their analyses and interpretations.

K_U14: Student can acquire knowledge on their own and develop their professional skills making use of diverse sources (in mother tongue as well as in foreign languages) and new technologies (ICT).

The course is dedicated to the analysis of the sublime (aesthetic and philosophical category) and relations between culture, religion and politics. It will present concepts and definitions of sublime, and (widely understood) postsecularism, theoaesthetics, political theology, urban studies as well as the origins of such phenomena and their relevance.

Subjects of the lectures (10):

1. Theories: a) postsecular thought, b) political theology, c) theoestetics, d) religious figures/rhetoric and political rhetoric.

2. Sublime and neo-sublime:

a) tradition of the category (Pseudo-Longinus, N. Boileau, E. Burke [+ English tradition], I. Kant)

b) Kant's sublime - new proposal: sublime as aesthetic, moral, psychological experience

- sublime paintings: C.D. Friedrich, British tradition, French tradition

c) XX-century sublime:

- technological sublime (American sublime): technological revolution, “national” sublime.

- sublime in photography: negative, social usage of the photopgraphy, reportage photography, portraits

- technological sublime/urban sublime; cities: electricity, bridges, skyscrapers, subway, railway [examples: a. American cities: New York, b. Moscow: subway, buildings, c. Singapore/Tokyo: “electronic city”, d. urban morphology/urban tissue (urban fabric): Toruń – “city under construction”: XIX-century fortress in XX/XXI-century city.

d) religious and ideological sublime:

- Radical Orthodoxy think tank and theological sublime

- political sublime: Zizek and economical sublime: Devin Singh

e) sublime and artistic avant-gard (reception, experience, new spirituality, irony): J.-F. Lyotard, painting (Rothko), poetry (Różewicz)
