Student possesses the knowledge of basic structure of each of described scripts.


Student is familiar with the historical context of creation and extintion of particuar scripts as well as language policies of Chinese rulers.

(tylko po angielsku) Student searches for, analyzes, evaluates, selects and consolidates information coming from written and electronic sources.


Student is capable of searching historical, cultural and linguistic context of the discussed script during the course.


Student can analyse and interpret the discussed script with applying the relevant basic terminology and methods.

Student recognizes the importance of processes of ethnic self-identification in Greater China Region in relation to language.

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with basic knowledge of the written languages of peoples living in East Asia, with particular emphasis on the cultural role of the written language, linking the written language with the basic concepts of time and space, language policy and state policy.

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The offer of the academic course on written languages of East Asian peoples from the cultural area of China aims to show the richness of the cultural heritage existing there. At the same time, basic concepts of the importance of having a written language will be discussed during the course. Students will be equipped with basic knowledge on understanding the social role of writing in the Chinese cultural area, the structure of particular written scripts as well as their spatial and temporal orientation. In addition, we will perform a historical analysis of political and cultural processes that influenced the development or decline of individual written languages. This thematic block will include, among others China's historical language policy and the language policy of the Government of the Republic of China and the PRC. On this basis, students will be able to attempt to assess the current condition of written languages in the Greater China region. The seminar will end with the project of building a full inventory of threats and survival conditions for selected endangered languages of East Asia as part of group work. The languages to be discussed are Dtomba (Nahsi); Li-ssaw (Lisu); Yi (Lolo); Nushu; Mongol; Manchu; Sui (Shui); Tangut (Xixia).

Metody i kryteria oceniania: (tylko po angielsku)

Continual assessment of the student’s activity during the seminar, evaluation of student’s homework (preparing presentations of particular written scripts) and group project on the inventory of threats and survival conditions for selected endangered languages of Greater China region (critical analysis of chosen literature, current socio-political situation or other cultural phenomena).

Final grade will be based on: student’s activity during the seminar, evaluation of student’s homework and of the final group project (in equal proportions).
