The student

W1: describes in detail connected speech phenomena. (K_W01, K_W03)

W2: defines thoroughly the relevant selected theoretical concepts in the area of phonetics, phonology and morphology, and provides pertinent examples. (K_W03)

W3: knows in detail the main differences between selected varieties of English. (K_W09)

W4: knows in detail the differences and similarities between the sound systems of English and Polish. (K_W09)

The student

U1: can discuss main introductory topics and explain basic notions in the area of connected speech and morphology, based on the material covered during the course. (K_U02, K_U05)

U2: can accurately transcribe English words and sentences with the IPA notation. (K_U06)

U3: can recognise the main differences between selected varieties of English. (K_U04)

K1: is aware of the level of their knowledge and skills pertaining to descriptive grammar of English and understands the need for constant learning and development, which finds confirmation in the results of successive continuous evaluation tasks. (K_K01)

In the summer semester, students revise key notions in phonetics and learn about selected varieties of English, basic notions in morphology and word formation processes.

In the winter semester, students learn about selected language phenomena from the area of English phonetics and phonology. In the summer semester, students will be provided with definitions of some basic concepts in prosody, morphology and types of word formation processes. The course makes it possible to achieve learning outcomes assumed for the subject.

− Theoretical aspects of rhythm and intonation

− Introduction to morphology; processes of word-formation in English

The final grade for the summer semester will be based on the following:

A. Continuous evaluation (40% of the final grade):

- Teacher’s observation based on answering teacher’s questions testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues described by the syllabus.

- A group project on selected varieties of English, presented as an online write-up and/or in-class multimedia presentation.

B. Final test (60% of the final grade): test containing open and closed questions, testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics, phonology, morphology and word formation processes described by the syllabus (W1, W2, W3, W4, U1, U2, U3, U4)

fail – 0-59%

satisfactory – 60-69 %

satisfactory plus – 70-75 %

good – 76-85 %

good plus – 86-90%

very good – 91-100
