The student

W1: describes in detail speech organs and their functions, classifies and characterises English speech sounds, describes in detail connected speech phenomena. (K_W01, K_W03)

W2: defines thoroughly the relevant selected theoretical concepts in the area of phonetics and phonology and provides pertinent examples. (K_W03)

W3: knows in detail the types of transcription and phonetic symbols pertaining to English. (K_W03)

W4: knows in detail the main differences between selected varieties of English. (K_W09)

W5: knows in detail the differences and similarities between the sound systems of English and Polish. (K_W09)

The student

U1: can discuss main introductory topics and explain basic notions in the area of phonetics and phonology, based on the material covered during the course. (K_U02, K_U05)

U2: can analyse the phonemes of English into their phonological properties, such as positions of articulators; can use computer software for basic speech processing. (K_U06)

U3: can accurately transcribe English words and sentences with the IPA notation. (K_U06)

U4: can recognise the main differences between selected varieties of English. (K_U04)

In the winter semester, students learn about selected language phenomena in the area of English phonetics and phonology. In the summer semester, they will also learn about selected varieties of English, basic notions in morphology and word formation processes.

In the winter semester, students learn about selected language phenomena from the area of English phonetics and phonology. In the summer semester, students will be provided with definitions of some basic concepts in prosody, morphology and types of word formation processes. The course makes it possible to achieve learning outcomes assumed for the subject.

Content distribution (Winter semester):

− Introduction (presentation of learning outcomes, content of the course, evaluation methods and criteria, code of conduct)

− Basic concepts in phonetics and phonology; speech organs; articulation, basic notions in speech perception

− Introduction to the phonetic alphabet and phonetic transcription

− Phonological system of English

− Selected phonological rules

− Theoretical basis of the division into weak and strong forms and function words

− Evaluation of the level of achievement of learning outcomes (written test)

− Feedback on the results of the written test and the overall result of continuous evaluation

Assessment methods:

Winter semester

In the winter semester, the course ends with a graded credit, composed of the following components A and B:

A. Continuous evaluation: Teacher’s observation (40% of the final grade) based on:

- answering teacher’s questions testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics and phonology described in the content of the course.

- one short written test checking the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics and phonology described in the content of the course.

B. Final end-of-term evaluation: test containing open and closed questions, testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics and phonology described in the content of the course (60% of the final grade) (W1, W2, W3, U1, U2, U3)

The final grade for the winter semester is the sum (A+B) of the results of the continuous evaluation and the end-of-term evaluation.

Summer semester:

The final grade for the summer semester will be based on the following:

A. Continuous evaluation (40% of the final grade):

- Teacher’s observation based on answering teacher’s questions testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues described by the syllabus.

- A group project on selected varieties of English, presented as an online write-up and/or in-class multimedia presentation.

B. Final test (60% of the final grade): test containing open and closed questions, testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics, phonology, morphology and word formation processes described by the syllabus (W1, W2, W3, W4, W5, U1, U2, U3)

satisfactory – 60-69 %

satisfactory plus – 70-75 %

good – 76-85 %

good plus – 86-90%
