The student

W1: defines linguistic similarities and differences between English and Polish (K_W01)

W2: describes elements of English and Polish at the level of morphological and syntactic analysis (K_W03)

W3: understands morphological and syntactic contrasts between English and Polish (K_W09)

The student

U1: is able to integrate contrastive analysis with other types of linguistic analysis (K_U01)

U2: is able to use the tools of contrastive grammar to analyse English and Polish texts and is capable of determining interlingual and intralingual influences (K_U06)

The goal of the course is to present the fundamental morphological and syntactic contrasts between the grammatical systems of Polish and English languages and to discuss typology of languages.

The problems include contrasts in derivational and inflectional morphology, clause structure and its syntactic and semantic implications. Contrasts are related to their potential inter and/or intralingual sources. The significance of contrasts for applied purposes is widely discussed.

The final grade is based on:

• A group presentation on contrastive analyses done outside the classroom (30% of the overall grade),

(W3, U1)

• In-class activity (10% of the overall grade),

(U1)

• Final exam (60% of the overall grade) designed to check:

i. students' knowledge of the course material,

ii. students' ability to use contrastive grammar terminology.

fail - below 60 %

satisfactory - 60-69 %

satisfactory plus - 70-74 %

good – 75-84 %

good plus - 85-89 %

very good - 90 and above %

Each failure to participate in classes or to do the assigned tasks has to be excused within the first week after the lesson missed. The final grade percentage will be reduced by 10 % for every unexcused absence from classes or assignment that a student has failed to complete (homework or asynchronous learning).
