The aim of the seminar History of English and Language Variation is to provide a description and explanation of variables within the English language in terms of diachronic (historical), regional, social and stylistic aspects. |

• English as a World Language • Language Variation: regional v. social and stylistic. • Language Variation in social terms (class, gender, age...), in terms of medium and channel of communication, field/domain of discourse and style/register. • The History of English: Old English, Middle English, Modern English (phonological, morpho-syntactic, lexical and semantic change). • Regional Varieties of English: British varieties, Scottish, Irish, American varieties, and other (post-colonial) varieties: Canadian, Australian, Indian, African and Caribbean. • Case Study: Australian English |
