MA SEMINAR IN LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES (dr hab. Anna Branach-Kallas, prof. UMK) (2020/2021)

In the first year of the seminar students are introduced to selected concepts and theories employed in MA research and in the process of writing MA dissertations in the field of cultural and literary studies. The first semester of the seminar is devoted to the discussion of recent trends in the field of cultural and literary studies connected to the students' MA projects, including gender, intertextuality, memory, war, trauma, postcolonialism, migration and diaspora, biopower and medical humanities.

MA SEMINAR IN LINGUISTICS (dr hab. Sławomir Wacewicz, prof. UMK) (2020/2021)

Students will be pursuing empirical projects (no predefined range of topics, but students will plan out an empirically oriented research project in linguistics). The first year of the MA seminar in Linguistics is aimed at developing in students a mindset and a skillset of an empirical researcher, and equips students with the knowledge about academic standards, universal principles of doing and presenting research, and empirical methods in particular (esp. formulating research questions and stating, operationalising and testing hypotheses). It also introduces the students to the necessary research techniques, esp. the use of computer programs and online apps.

MA SEMINAR IN TRANSLATION STUDIES (dr Monika Linke-Ratuszny) (2020/2021)

The course focuses on selecting a problem existing within the field of Translation Studies and preparing a Master’s thesis related with the given problem, with the use of methodologies accepted and recognised in the discipline. Thesis-related issues are further developed in subsequent chapters following the supervisor’s guidance. The proposed spectrum of topics covers a brief overview of the history of translation, the linguistic, cultural (functionalist) and cognitive approaches, the concept of equivalence, norm and translation competence, specialist languages and translation of non-literary texts.

MA SEMINAR IN CULTURAL AND LITERARY STUDIES

The first year of the MA seminar introduces students to selected research methods, problems and theories in the field of cultural and literary studies. During the winter term, the seminar is dedicated to discussing concepts and critical approaches connected to the students’ MA projects, including such topics as cultural identity, utopian and dystopian fiction, fandom, identity and power, biopolitics, and ecocriticism.
