The aim of the MA seminar is to guide the students through the process of writing and editing individual MA projects as well as developing their research interests and skills in such fields as literature, culture, linguistics, translation studies, or editing studies. Each student can select one MA seminar group notwithstanding the major MA programme, which means that, for example, the MA seminar in literature and culture can be taken by a student who pursues the Translation Studies programme.

LITERARY STUDIES (dr Jarosław Hetman)

During the first semester of the seminar we will be working on formulating the topics for MA theses, planning research, and dividing materials into cohesive thesis plans. Additionally we will be reviewing 20th-century literary theory in order to help students establish the theoretical perspectives that they will adopt in their research.

TRANSLATION STUDIES (dr Ewa Kościałkowska-Okońska)

The aim of the MA seminar is to select a research problem in Translation Studies and to write a master's thesis related to the problem applying the methodology adopted in the field. The scope of aspects and issues of the MA thesis are developed in subsequent chapters in compliance with the supervisor's instructions. The spectrum of topics includes, for example, linguistic, cultural (functionalist) and cognitive approaches, as well as concepts such as equivalence, norm or translation competence, specialist languages, interpreting, translation competence, etc.

In the first year of the MA seminar the focus shall be laid on the discussion of theoretical issues and selection of thematic fields, which students want to develop in their theses and in their research.

The seminar, in the first semester, is divided into class and individual meetings.

During class meetings, the students will have the possibility to discuss the theoretical materials related to their research ideas and projects.

MA SEMINAR IN LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES (dr hab. Edyta Lorek-Jezińska, prof. UMK) (2021/2022)

In the first year of the seminar students are introduced to selected concepts and theories employed in MA research and in the process of writing MA dissertations in the field of cultural and literary studies; the first semester of the seminar is devoted to the discussion of recent trends in the field of cultural and literary studies connected to the students' MA projects: the seminar might focus on such topics as intertextuality and adaptation, trauma, post-apocalypse, ecocriticism, transmedia and participatory culture, fan fiction, myth and fairy tale, madness and melancholia. In the second semester students will be expected to formulate their research problem within the field of literature or culture (or their practical applications), choose the method and theory, create a preliminary bibliography and begin writing their first chapter.

MA SEMINAR IN CULTURAL STUDIES (dr Katarzyna Marak) (2022/2023)

In the first year of the seminar students are introduced to selected approaches to MA research and subject conceptualisation, as well as the the process of writing MA dissertations in the field of cultural and literary studies; the first semester of the seminar is devoted to selection, discussion and researching the students' MA projects: the seminar might focus on such topics as game studies, horror fiction, science fiction, and selected aspects of Internet culture. In order to obtain a passing grade students will be expected to formulate their research problem within the field of literature or culture (or their practical applications), choose the method and theory, and create a preliminary bibliography and thesis outline. In the second term, studens begin writing their first chapter, the completed version of which will be the basis of their final course grade.
