  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

W1: The student possesses in-depth, organized knowledge of the Anglophone horror fiction texts and their cultural significance in the context of the given area and time-frame (K_W09).

U1: The student can employ a variety of research methods and techniques to gather and demonstrate their knowledge concerning the subject of the course, as demonstrate to others methods of life-long learning through debate (K_U04, K_U10).

Short description:

The course aims at broadening the students knowledge and comprehension of the nature of horror fiction texts. The discussion will revolve around the characteristic features of horror texts, as well as the function and role of horror fiction in society. The expectations and the reception of classic tropes and themes by the readers will also be analyzed.

Warning: due to the nature of the genre, the examined texts may include disturbing content, or depictions of physical or sexual violence.

The students will be graded according to their participation in class and realisation of assigned tasks and a final project. The course is supplemented by a Moodle course (which in case of e-learning will become the primary way of conducting classes: https://moodle.umk.pl/WHUM/course/view.php?id=1629).

The course aims at broadening the students knowledge and comprehension of the nature of horror fiction texts. The discussion will revolve around the characteristic features of horror texts, as well as the function and role of horror fiction in society. The expectations and the reception of classic tropes and themes by the readers will also be analysed. The thematic blocks of the course include:

→traditional horror narratives (ghost, vampires, the undead, and cosmic horror)

→new horror narratives related to contemporary fears and anxieties (society, social media, ageing and ethics)
