Efekty uczenia się - wiedza: | (tylko po angielsku) The student: W1 (K_W01) is aware of the systemic differences between English and Polish and their relevance to tranlation W2 (K_W02) has C1+ competence in English W3 (K_W03) has in-depth knowledge of translation studies as part of applied linguistics W4 (K_W04) identifies references to major texts of Anglophone culture in English source texts and their bearing on translation W5 (K_W07) knows professional terminology used to refer to translation, as well as academic terminology used in translation studies, and the methodology used to identify translation solutions W6 (K_W11) has in-depth knowledge of LSP in English, particularly with regard to academic and business uses of English W7 (K_W12) knows the major legal and ethical dilemmas connected with using modern tools in the translator's profession, handling translations and clients. W8 (K_W13) knows how a translator's workshop is organized and what factors commonly determine pricing for translation services |

Efekty uczenia się - kompetencje społeczne: | (tylko po angielsku) The student K1 (K_K02) is able to obtain information to solve cognitive and practical problems encountered during the translation process. K2 (K_K04) appreciates the achievements of the translator's profession and assumes responsibility for the tasks commissioned. K3 (K_K05) identifies and solves legal and ethical dilemmas connected with the translator's profession, in terms of handling both the translations and clients. K4 (K_K06) is ready to clarify, negotiate and discuss the conditions of a translation commission |

(tylko po angielsku) The aim of the course is to translate texts from English into Polish and from Polish into English by transferring the meaning of the original into the target language and paying special attention to extralinguistic factors. The topics of the texts may include tourism and architecture, current affairs, instruction manuals, literature, culture-related events, sport, business, law, medicine. The text types represented may be news articles, reports, academic papers, manuals, weebsites, brochures and promotional materials. Topics discussed may cover dealing with cultural issues, register, humour, language exercises, CATs, machine translation and postediting. Due to time constraints not all topics may be covered during the semester and may be updated to address students' needs. The list of topics will be discussed with the students and announced at Class 1. |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
(tylko po angielsku) REGULAR CLASSES Learning materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform. The student will be obliged to study them, complete topic-related assignments and upload them to Moodle by the agreed deadline. Assessment methods: 1) in-class and home assignments, collected into a portfolio - after each class, a student should collect all pertinent materials in a paper or electronic portfolio, made available to the teacher at the end of the semester; the tasks will not be individually graded (unless in exceptional situations like a borderline final grade); however, if they are completed in a neglectful manner, exhibiting less than C1+ command of English and lack of adequate research, the student's final grade will be lowered. (W1, W2, W6, U1, U6, U7) 2) presentation [15%] (pair or group work, around 20 minutes + exercise) covering issues arising in the translation of a text assigned as homework, with: - specific examples of translation problems, - suggested solutions, - useful resources on which the solutions are based), - related translation exercise for the classmates. or a translation-related topic discussed in class, with: - relevant terms and concepts (bibliography and resources where possible), - examples of situations in which a given issue may arise, - related exercises for the classmates: terms to explain, real/hypothetical scenarios to discuss (W3, W5, W7, W8, U5, U6, K1, K2, K3) 3) graded in-class translations - two per semester [30% each], dates agreed with students at one of the first two meetings, translation of brief texts (about 200 words, each): one from English into Polish, the other from Polish into English. If failed, the assignment may be re-taken once. (W1, W2, W6, U7, 4) project - [25%] translation of one text of student’s choice (1800 characters, spaced; any topic) – from English into Polish or from Polish into English, plus translation diary. If failed, the project may be re-taken once (translation of a new text). (W1, W2, W4, U6, U7, K1, K2) 5) activity during the class (understood as asking pertinent questions or expressing opinions) - The activity as such will not be graded; however, if the student fails to contribute to the class, their final grade may be lowered. (W4, U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U8, K4) Assessment criteria: - home, classroom and online assignments – teacher’s monitoring and notes; - portfolio (printed or electronic) of in-class and home assignments – after each class, the student should collect the materials connected therewith; teacher’s monitoring and notes; - graded in-class translations (two pers emester), - presentation; evaluated by the classmates and the teacher, - project: translation of one text of student’s choice (English-Polish, Polish-English) + translation diary; the translation is graded, - activity, understood as student's contribution to the class, teacher’s monitoring and notes, ‘Teacher’s monitoring and notes’ means that the teacher will record whether and how the student completed a given assignment. 2- 0-59% 3 – 60-69% 3+ – 70-75% 4 – 76-85% 4+ - 86-90% 5 – 91-100% ----------------------- (in the event of) ONLINE CLASSES Learning materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform. The student will be obliged to study them, complete topic-related assignments and upload answer sheets to Moodle by the deadline (usually a week of the publication of materials). Online meetings via MsTeams will be held regularly, in which case the student will be obliged to have access to the platform. Assessment methods: - tests - two per semester (30% each), dates agreed with students at the first meeting, involving the translation of two brief texts (about 200 words, each): one from English into Polish, the other from Polish into English. If failed, a test may be re-taken once. - project (25%) - translation of one text of student’s choice (1800 characters, spaced; any topic) – from English into Polish or from Polish into English, plus translation diary. If failed, the project may be re-taken once (translation of a new text). - presentation (15%) of a translation task completed at home or a translation-related issue researched at home - group assignments - translating and proofreading; the students will have a week to upload their assignments. The tasks will not be graded (unless in exceptional situations like a borderline final grade); however, if they are completed in a neglectful manner or uploaded after the deadline, the student's final grade may be lowered. The teacher may refuse to give the student the final grade if the student persistently fails to complete the tasks assigned. |
