W1 (K_W04) understands translation problems related to the treatment of intertextual and intermedial allusions and citations in audiovisuial translation

W2 (K_W05) knows the conventional treatment of style, figures of speech and literary devices in translating audiovisual texts, and the problems connected to these conventions

W3 (K_W06) understands the impact of new technologies on the study of audiovisual texts and their translation, media accessibility and intermediality

W4 (K_W07) has an in-depth knowledge on the terminology and methods used in the study and profession of audiovisual translation

W5 (K_W08) knows the relationship between the characteristics of particular types of media / communication channels, and the technical standards of audiovisual translation

W6 (K_W11) has an in-depth knowledge of specialised terminology used in the study and profession of audiovisual translation

W7 (K_W12) has an in-depth knowledge on the legal and ethical aspects of audiovisual translation

W8 (K_W13) has an in-depth knowledge of the professions related to audiovisual translation and the dominant modes of employment

U1 (K_U03) analyses the translation task to choose an effective angle for pre-translation text analysis and research in light of the required text function, technical specifications, linguistic, cultural, and technical problems

U2 (K_U04) cooperates online while researching and translating audiovisual texts, communicating problems and conclusions to other translation team members

U3 (K_U05) effectively communicates with the (simulated) client to clarify the commission and to explain the impact of translation conventions and differences between Polish and English on translation decisions in various modes of audiovisual translation

U4 (K_U09) effectively communicates with other members of the (simulated) professional team, both online and in-person, to establish or adjust translation policy and workflow

U5 (K_U10) is able to access professional literature and guidelines on audiovisual translation to follow changes in translation conventions and technical standards

U6 (K_U12) offers translations based on identifying culturally-loaded items in the source text and anticipating potential cultural problems in translation

K4 (K_K05) notices and solves conflicts of loyalty towards the source text, its author, the commissioner, and the target audience in audiovisual translation

The course will present technical and synchrony-related issues in the translation of audiovisual texts. The topics will include:

- polysemiotic and monosemiotic texts, constrained translation, interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation, isosemiotic and diasemiotic translation

- technical standards and constraints, synchrony between channels in film translation

- subtitling: reducing and dividing captions, spotting, basic functions of subtitling software

- translation for voice-over: text synchronization, reduction, speakability

- translation for audio-description as intersemiotic translation: conventions and common mistakes

- translation for dubbing: production process and technical requirements

The order and extent of the above topics is subject to change to accommodate students' needs and interests.

The course discusses selected issues in the translation of LSP texts related to the medium (translation of audiovisual and interactive texts), the content of the message and the addressee. Students will be required to analyze and translate texts from selected areas into Polish and English.

In the winter semester, the course will discuss constrained translation, with specific focus on translating audiovisual and interactive materials. Students will prepare translations for use in subtitling, voice-over, dubbing and audio-description.
