The student

W1: knows the legal issues connected with the organisation of the publishing process and its editorial outcomes (K_W12);

W2: has in-depth knowledge of the economic and legal principles of the functioniing of publishers in Anglophone countries and in Poland (K_W13).

The student

U1: is able to prepare his or her academic publishing project ready for print or digital publication and is aware of the problems encountered in this process (K_U04).

The student

K1:, prepared to work in the publishing business, is aware of the potential problems and limitations related to the professional context, and of the necessity to find the required information as well as offering his/her editorial solutions (K_K02, K_K06).

The aim of the course is to provide students with skills and competences required at the specific publishing stages in order to successfully prepare a composite publication project.

The course consists of a project concerning planning, preparing and launching a coherent multi-page English publication. The students will learn how to work in the publication environment. The course will be completed with individual submission of an academic multi-page editorial project in English.

- How publishers function (4 hrs.)

- Legal issues in publishing (4 hrs.)

- Quiz (2 hrs.)

- Templates and styles; publishing academic texts: common referencing styles and their features (4 hrs.)

- Covers for academic journals (2 hrs.)

- Publication challenges: dramatic and poetic texts (2 hrs.)

- Indexing (4 hrs.)

- Project completion in class (4 hrs.)

- Feedback and conclusion (2 hrs.)

A graded credit on the basis of the assignments assessing the level of achieving particular learning outcomes:

• A multi-page editorial project: preparation, design and launch of an academic journal (including a presentation of the project) - U1, K1

• A quiz assessing the level of knowlege of copyright gained during the course - W1, W2

Assessment criteria:

fail – 0-59 %

satisfactory – 60-69 %

satisfactory plus – 70-75 %

good – 76-85 %

good plus – 86-90 %

very good – 91-100 %
