Efekty uczenia się - wiedza:

W1 (K_W04) recognizes translation problems related to the treatment of intertextual allusions in literary translation

W2 (K_W05) recognizes a range of literary figures and devices and demonstrates an understanding of their role in Anglophone literary texts, taking them into account while rendering literary texts into the target language

W3 (K_W07) proposes and adjusts translation strategies on the basis of literary analysis, linking translation approach to the relevant characteristics of a given text, author and period.

W4 (K_W08) has an in-depth knowledge on the terminology and methods used in the study and profession of literary translation

W5 (K_W11) identifies, researches and successfully translates specialised terminology, elements of non-stanard language varieties and historic dialects encountered in literary texts

W6 (K_W12) has an in-depth knowledge on the legal and ethical aspects of literary translation

W7 (K_W13) has an in-depth knowledge of the professions related to literary translation and the dominant modes of employment

Efekty uczenia się - umiejętności:

U1 (K_U03) analyses the translation task to choose an effective angle for pre-translation text analysis and research in light of the required text function, technical specifications, linguistic and cultural problems

U2 (K_U04) cooperates online while researching and translating literary texts, communicating problems and conclusions to the teacher and other translation team members

U3 (K_U05) effectively communicates with the (simulated) client to explain the impact of translation decisions and differences between Polish and English on translation decisions

U4 (K_U09) gives and takes constructive criticism when copperating with other members of the (simulated) professional team, both online and in-person, and responding to the teacher's suggestions

U5 (K_U10) when reviewing peer translations, is able to refer to professional literature and professional guidelines on text formatting and use of Polish in literary translation

U6 (K_U12) is able to identify and explain the cultural aspects of literary texts and propose workable solutions to minimize cultural losses or compensate for some of them in translation, with the interests of both the author and the reader in mind

K4 (K_K06) is ready to invest in improving their translator's workshop

The course will prepare students for identifying and solving typical problems in literary translation, with special attention to literary analysis as a prerequisite for successful translation. Students will translate prose and poetic excerpts representing various challenges in translation, and review translations by their colleagues.

The course will discuss distinctive features of literary translation as challenges demanding research skills (to understand and interpret the source text) and creativity (to compensate for literary effects lost in the process of translation). The course will cover:

- Bilingual competence versus extralinguistic and strategic competence in literary translation

- Pre-translation analysis and interpretation of a literary text; comprehension and terminological mistakes in literary translation

- Translation shifts and deformations; compensation in literary translation

- Stylistic analysis and imitation; target culture norms and stereotypes of literariness

- Stylized language and non-standard language varieties; archaic and colloquial language; translation of dialogues and forms of address

- Culture-specific items; domestication and foreignization in literary translation

- Translation of wordplays; the notion of untranslatability; the ethics of literary translation

70% of the final score for a semester-long project (source text analysis and translation homework, documented by stage-by-stage uploads of commented texts to Moodle)

30% of the final score for in-class activity and completion of homework, documented by the teacher's notes and translation portfolio (Moodle). The actvities involve:

producing translations; reviewing peer and professional translations; identifying potential translation issues in source texts; researching authors, historical and litrerary contexts, specific terms and phrases; identifying and correcting errors; generating and commenting on alternative translations.
