The course aims at providing a general outlook on the structure and basic principles of the European system of human rights

It includes the analysis of material, procedural and institutional arrangements of the European system of human rights, with particular emphasis on the Council of Europe. Other regional organizations and their role in the protection of human rights are also mentioned. The crucial part of the course covers the overview of the catalogue of human rights and freedoms enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights and the corresponding case-law of the European Court of Human Rights.

3/ Overview of institutional arrangements of the European system of human rights protection - 4 h

4/ Procedural aspects of the European system of human rights protection - 6 h

5/ Principles of state responsibility for violations of human rights in the European human rights law - 4 h

6/ Overview of the catalogue of human rights and freedoms enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights with the corresponding case-law of the European Court of Human Rights - 10 h

Walter Kälin, Jörg Künzli, The Law of International Human Rights Protection (2019).

The lecturer will advise on the recommended literature and materials on the beginning of the course.
