This course provides a deeper knowledge into the largely unknown and underrated Baltic States from both physical and human geography perspective. These are apparent from personal observations, insight and thoughts as obtained from few-year stay in Estonia and Latvia. Come, join and discover the unique part of Europe! The first lecture will be held on October 26th 2020 (Monday)! |

1. Where do the Baltic States actually belong to? A general insight into location, language and demography. 2. Between the East and the West: a glimpse into the history and impact on the contemporary society. 3. “Tanning” at the seaside (far from the Mediterranean though). 4. Passing the lowlands. 5. Hiking in the highlands. 6. Do not mix Lithuania with Latvia! Similar, but largely different. 7. No kissing, but rather sitting naked in own sauna! How to understand the society? 8. Let the Europe hear us! Singing and dancing festivals, and other national hobbies too. 9. Pagan summer solstice versus the Christian fests: celebration and religion habits. 10. Live long and drink a birch juice! How does the food differ from rest of Europe? |

Assessment methods: - final assignment project: “So please, convince your friend about visiting the Baltic States”. Student prepares its own super convincing project/work at the end of course – 80% of final note - active participation in classes – 20% of final note Assessment criteria: fail- 0-51% satisfactory- 52-65% satisfactory plus- 66-75% good - 76-89% good plus- 90-94% very good- 95-100% |
