Zakres tematów: (tylko po angielsku)

The semester will comprise:

1) Presentations of sample works, methodologies and tools in translation studies (with tasks completed by the students and discussed or presented in class)

  • a typical outline of an MA project in translation studies, examples of effective and problematic structure, well-defined and unworkable research objectives

  • a survey of library and online resources in translation studies

  • an overview of descriptive and systems approaches to translation studies

  • examples of the need to operationalize translation studies concepts to develop detailed and flexible research procedures

  • directions in contemporary research in film translation studies

  • digital tools in modern translation studies

  • work with excerpts from translation studies works (introduction and conclusion sections, hypotheses)

    • 2) Work with translation studies articles texts selected by the students:

  • researching available sources (online journals and library holdings)

  • briefly characterising the work (e.g. a quantitative process-oriented study of reduction in English-language subtitling)

  • summarizing and paraphrasing key excerpts

  • preparing an outline of the work, analysing the structure

  • identifying and explaining key terms, contrasting specialized usage and everyday usage

  • analysing the underlying assumptions and references to previous research

  • identifying innovative and unclear points

  • reconstructing and replicating the research procedures

  • evaluating the methodology

  • proposing alternative solutions and explanations

  • outlining similar studies

    • 3) Individual meetings with students to discuss their research interests:

  • proposing tentative research topics

  • searching for translation studies sources related to the topics

  • listing the most promising topics and discussing their merits and problems
