This course focuses on major changes the American society has undergone in the last 20 years. Students will examine various phenomena taking place in that time by searching for their reasons, analyzing the processes and examining their consequences.

The course has two major purposes. First, the course is designed to introduce university students to the field of social and cultural anthropology by drawing upon the rich ethnographic examples. With its comparative approach to the study of cultural diversity anthropology invites us to learn about and understand the cultural otherness. Second, the course goes beyond the basic outline of introductory knowledge and shows how anthropologists explore the complexities of everyday human life.

Anthropologists do travel to different parts of the world to study variety of cultures but they also study culturally distinct groups within their own cultures. In an anthropological perspective each of us is the product of a specific social setting and associated cultural tradition: people are pursuing a multitude of different interests and holding very different views about the nature of things. Anthropology can be seen as a way of getting to know ourselves through finding out about the others.

The course tracks how the processes of datafication and mediatization shape contemporary societies. Within media and communication framework we will study how the intersections of technology and data effect the agency of particular users and social institutions.

Głównym celem jest przedstawienie zastosowania metod i teorii socjologicznych w badaniach zagadnień ekonomicznych. Odwołując się do klasycznych (Weber, Marks, Durkheim, Simmel) oraz współczesnych teorii i koncepcji socjologicznych (Granovetter, DiMaggio, North) omówimy najważniejsze i aktualne tematy socjologii ekonomicznej, m.in. społeczeństwo bezgotówkowe, ład korporacyjny, sieci i zmowy w elitach biznesu, odmiany kapitalizmu, zaufanie i władza w gospodarce i relacjach biznesowych.

Where do new technologies originate? Who are the inventors of the Internet, the smartphone, and solar panels? What lessons can we learn from the rapid development of Covid-19 vaccines? And why is there still no cure for cancer?

These are some of the questions addressed in this course. The title may seem provocative, but as we will explore, the path from science to business is not always the most effective way to invent new technologies. Many technologies are created outside of academia. Technological development requires effective mechanisms for science and business to work together.

Using philosophical tools and methods the course aims at recognizing gender problem in science and its epistemological and axiological consequences.

The aims of this course are to familiarize the concept of End-of-life care (EOL), which usually refers to the last year of life, although for some people this will be longer (long term severe diseases as dementia) or significantly shorter. End of life care is not just the medical care provided to the individual who is dying, but also refers to the social support available to patients, their family carers, and to bereavement support for families. The principles of the interdisciplinary team and the special role of social work in end of life care will be presented. Hospice-palliative care in social education about end of life, death and mourning, with particular attention towards voluntary service and social work in Europe will be addressed.

This course aims to provide basic information about buddhism, its history, development of traditions, and schools. It explains its global expansion and discusses the influence of dharma in contemporary science and art. What is more, it deliberates on contemporary phenomena related to Buddhas' teachings, such as “socially engaged buddhism” and “buddhist modernism”.

This course analyses social, symbolic, and political power mechanisms in the media dimension. These categories are discussed as an example of the influential journalists and media owners in the XX and XXI centuries who influenced people, groups, and all societies who changed the world in a particular dimension. Consequently, students will analyse several tools/instruments/methods of influence on public opinion.
